Life As We Now Know it.

I know, I know, we have been slacking in our posting duties. Here is a quick recap of our first three months in Virginia.

I headed off to South Africa to shoot a commercial for one of my clients for 10 days. We worked 95% of the time, but occasionally we got to glimpse the beauty of Capetown and the surrounding areas.

We got to sample the local delicacies. Lot’s and lot’s of seafood.

Many Mentos lost their lives during production.

We decided that January was a lot of work,and we all needed a nap.

In February I got to take the company jet to North Carolina for a client meeting. Ironically the name of the airline was MartinAir.

Josh taught Flea how to play soccer. He’s a natural Goalie and is now in training for the next World Cup.

We had a quick visit from my Dad who was in town for a big ribbon cutting ceremony with Governor McDonnell for their new wind technology center. His company, Gamesa, was in all the local papers for their recent partnership with Newport News.

We had a low key Valentine’s Day. Here’s Josh modeling his new Toy Story snuggie. Yes, it’s a childs XL.

We had a brief reprieve from the snow and ice, allowing a gorgeous day outside with Flea and his favorite companion, his tennis ball.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Spring graces us with it’s presence soon! Now back to work..

To say that a lot happened in the past month is an understatement. So much so that I can’t possibly recap all that went down in one blog post. Instead, let’s review the past month in the best way possible, through pictures.

Started work @ The Martin Agency, despite a snowstorm on my first day. The weather here is actually not bad compared to Ohio, but word is that people in Richmond don’t know how to drive in a few inches of snow.

We’ve been busy unpacking the house and losing Flea in the chaos of boxes. Despite malfunctioning smoke alarms that decided to go off @ 7am and continue to bleep everytime we turned on the heat, we are in love with our house! (Smoke alarms have since been swapped for new ones)

The boys can wrestle all they want on our carpet (yes, it’s worth italicizing). You don’t realize how nice it is to have until you live with hardwood for 7 years.

Holy Batman, we moved to Virginia.

Yes, it’s true. After 7 1/2 years in San Francisco, we took the plunge and moved back East. While completely bittersweet, the one thing that made it all worthwhile was the new digs. We are now the proud renters of a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house sitting on an acre of fenced land. The best part? It costs half as much as our 1 bedroom apartment in SF. Jealous? If you’re in SF, you should be. (And now begins my campaign to get every friend to move to Virginia)

Out of the three of us, no one is happier than Flea. After growing up in our cramped apartment, he’s not quite sure to do with all the space, let alone all of the wild animals running through his new backyard. Between the random squirrel rustling through the leaves or the two dogs next door dying to make friends with him, he’s a bit overwhelmed. But we’re hoping it won’t take long for this city dog to turn country.

As for us, don’t expect any “y’all’s” to be dropping out of our mouths anytime soon. We are SF’ers at heart and plan to stay that way. We’re still adjusting to the complete 180 of our daily lives, but so far are loving the perks. (Who knew having a 10 mile stretch of shopping down the road would be so convenient! Target anyone?)

Falafel Lady Fries

We have a qeue of food trucks that sell various lunches at our office each week. The GSP favorite is Liba Falafel on Fridays, also know as the Falafel Lady Truck. Her pita sandwiches are the best in the city, but it’s her hand cut sweet potato fries that are the star player. Every week my mouth starts watering for them on Monday, and I began to wonder why I should have to wait on the Falafel Lady to fulfill my craving. This past time I ordered them I decided to carefully examine them and figure out the recipe behind their deliciousness. A stop at the store and a few ingredients later I was on my way to making a homemade version. Since fries are usually thought of as a side, I went ahead and made homemade chicken fingers as well.

The final product was spot on and got the Josh and Flea stamp of approval.

Today Josh and Chad stopped by my office to capture several testimonials from my co-workers about Beats Headphones. A few people went all out in their interview, like Luke, who was jamming and jumping all over the sidewalk. He even got his dog Silas, who is also our beloved department dog, to give the headphones a try.

I think all of my fellow SF’ers wishful thinking has gone to waste. The fog doesn’t appear to have any plans to move on. While technically it could still clear up and heat up in October, it’s not looking good for all those hoping to break out their shorts one last time.

Sigh. The weekend is over and I have nothing to report. We didn’t do anything. And. it. was. amazing. Every once in a while you just need to reboot and have no schedule or list of things to do. And that’s exactly what we did the past two days. We watched movies, played with Flea, baked, cooked, and most importantly relaxed. Doesn’t Flea look rested ready to tackle the work week?

Wednesday night our friends Pat and Tiff were in town, and we decided to take a late night walk and show them some of the cool vantage points around us. Nob Hill, the neighborhood we live in, is located on the tallest hill in the city, which means its got some amazing views (it also means that your legs will throb for days after walking them). Our first stop was a garden a few blocks away where Josh actually proposed to me. Then, we moved onto what we fondly call the Chill Spot, which is basically several walking paths and benches set into the side of a hill. Easily has the most gorgeous views in the city, which of course my iPhone photos don’t even come close to doing justice.

Flea mastered the game of hide and seek as a wee pup, and now knows every one of my hiding spots in the apartment. Even though these days it’s a little less hide and a little more chase, it’s hilarious to watch Flea try to outsmart me and figure out new ways to trick him.

If you like someone, date them for 10 years.

Well, maybe marry them after 9. Ten years ago today, little Josh walked little Eryn to her bus and nervously asked her out. And she nervously said yes. And thus began a very long relationship that spanned over high school, college, and everything after. And then there was Flea, and two became three, and this is starting to get very cheese-y..

Yesterday marked a quarter century of me being alive, and was also the start of Same Age Month. Every year for about 5 weeks, Josh and I are the same age. And every year I remind him that he’ll be older and wiser again in no time. Seeing as we are both quickly on our way to the big 3-0, I made sure this year to tell him how happy I was that he would be able to break in that age for me. Being the awesome husband that he is, he smiled and shrugged and made me a delicious birthday breakfast (although I think Flea was the most excited for it).

After a few sweet phone calls from the fam, we decided to take advantage of a rare gorgeous day and headed back down to the marina. Instead of lunch though, we thought it was time to do the ultimate SF attraction.

Feast your eyes on Rocket Boat. A 50-person speedboat that can do incredibly tight turns and flies across the bay at unhinging speeds. Described as a roller coaster in water, I can assure you, it didn’t disapoint.

IT. WAS. AMAZING.

Not just amazing, it was one of the coolest things I’ve done in San Francisco. In 7 years. And that’s saying something. I cannot remember the last time Josh and I laughed, cried, and gleefully screamed like a child so much in 30 minutes. We got soaked, we zipped under the Bay Bridge, flew past the ballpark, got soaked again, and enjoyed every frickin minute of it. I highly suggest that everyone of you take a spin when you come to visit us. Nay, I demand that we do it!

The cherry on top of this amazing day were two presents from Josh (a new wireless keyboard and trackpad!!), a fabulous sunset dinner on the water, and a delicious homemade cake.

Did I mention that I am the luckiest gal alive?

After a cold summer, our Sunday’s have finally been reclaimed by adventures down to the marina. The 15 minute walk to the water is gorgeous all the way down, and I think we both agree it’s a super relaxing and fun way to spend the weekend. We decided to try a new place for lunch, a little hole in the wall hidden behind all the fresh fish stands. It was decent, but I think overall we are hooked on our usual haunt, the Blue Mermaid. Best clam chowder you’ll ever eat.

After filling up, we stopped into the old Mechanical Museum and played a few of the old games. It was kind of packed, and a lot of the machines were broken, so we didn’t stay long. But we made sure to step out back and take in the gorgeous view of the bay. I was surprised when we walked out and came face to face with a giant submarine. Perhaps next weekend will call for a tour of it.

Have you seen the ears on Flea? It’s no surprise that one of his many nicknames is Batman. (It’s also Pee Paws, Mackbone, FleaMackers, Monkey, FleaBurgers, Puppers, and pretty much any other slew of words that we deem funny when put together)

Josh recently rediscovered his Wacom tablet now that he has his new computer and below is the hilarious result. Now if only we could convince Flea to let us dress him like this for Halloween..
